Sonic The Hedgehog 2 had one of the most impressive plot twists from the first game in which Dr Eggman is planning world destruction once more and Sonic is the only thing in the world that can stop him. The most impressive thing about this game is that it was released so early into the gaming revolution but the quality that it showed compared to other competitors at the time is one of the reasons why Sonic became so popular over times.
Looking to more recent times, Sonic Mania which was released on multiple platforms including PC, PlayStation and Xbox further showed how popular the games continues to be even in 2017 when it was released and Steam fans have been that impressed with it that they give it a 9/10 rating. It's crazy that a 2D can be so popular even in the present day with all the technology that game developers have to create games with now. However, this is purely popular due to the nostalgic views on the Sonic series and will continue to be popular moving into the future.
And finally, one of the best 3D games that Sega have ever made for Sonic is Sonic Adventure 2 which was released on for Sega Dreamcast back in 2001.
